Back pain

Back pain - this is a very common complaint among patients, which can be caused by many different reasons.

Thus, back pain is not a single symptom, but several: most often the patient complains of pain and stiffness in the lumbar region, especially when standing for long periods of time, but also of swelling and weakness in the lumbar region.

Causes of back muscle pain:

There are many causes of lower back pain. In many patients, excessive pronation of the foot (inwards) can cause back problems. Excess pronation rotates the tibia and the knee joint and increases anterior tilt of the pelvis and forward displacement of body weight.

This leads to increased lumbar lordosis and lordotic curvature. This increases muscle tension, causing discomfort and back pain, especially when standing upright for long periods. Pronation reduces the vertical distance of the footrest to the ground and causes the hip joint to lose its symmetrical balance. Structural leg length discrepancy means that one leg is actually shorter than the other. In this case, patients often experience unilateral pronation as a natural compensation for the structural balance. Both problems, functional and structural, in the presence of a length discrepancy lead to back pain. When the patient develops a leg length difference, scoliosis is often observed.

Treatment of back pain:

Treatment of back pain is often through stretching and strengthening exercises, manipulation of the soft tissues of the spine through massage therapy, etc. Therapy with individual inserts is also recommended. Correction of overpronation with inserts restores the balance of symmetry in the knee and hip joints and eliminates rotation of the latter structures by reducing the load on the sacrum.

In patients with a structural leg-length discrepancy, orthopaedic inserts should be used to correct, in particular, overpronation. Another solution is heel lift to compensate for the shortening of the leg, which was affecting the pain in the lumbar region. So, if you have been experiencing pain in your back muscles or lumbar region for some time, don't wait to see a doctor to make your back pain a thing of the past.
